Digital Field Mapping

Digital field mapping apps for smartphones and tablets enable geologists to collect field data and directly build 3D models in MOVE. Petex offers FieldMOVE Clino for smartphones and FieldMOVE for larger touchscreen tablets (iOS and Android), both designed by geologists for geologists with intuitive, familiar interfaces and built-in help and user guides to support quick adoption and ease of use in the field.

FieldMOVE overview

FieldMOVE brings digital geological mapping to tablets, combining intuitive data capture with powerful 3D model integration in MOVE. Designed for larger touchscreen devices, it extends the functionality of FieldMOVE Clino into a map-centric workflow, enabling more detailed interpretation and field-based modelling.

Build maps in the field

Once sufficient data is collected, users can create geological boundaries, fault traces and lithological polygons directly on their basemap using precision drawing tools, including a virtual mouse for fine control. All linework is fully georeferenced, ensuring seamless transfer of spatial data into downstream workflows.

Export and integrate

Projects can be easily exported in multiple formats:

  • MOVE file for direct use in MOVE modelling and analysis

  • CSV for tabular data workflows

  • KMZ for visualisation in Google Earth

Platform compatibility

FieldMOVE is built using Qt (the same platform as MOVE) and is designed for tablet use only.

iOS (iPad & iPad mini)

Requires iOS 8 or later. Recommended: iPad 4 or newer, or iPad mini 2 or newer. WiFi + Cellular models are required for GPS functionality.

Android tablets

Requires Android 4.0 or later. Devices must include a magnetometer, gyroscope and accelerometer for full orientation support.

Faster field data capture

FieldMOVE Clino is designed to significantly speed up geological data collection—up to 10x faster than traditional methods—while maintaining accuracy and consistency.

A free version is available, with a $5 USD upgrade unlocking additional geological symbols, stereonet plotting, and (iOS only) the ability to draw lines and polygons directly on basemaps in the field.

Device compatibility

FieldMOVE Clino is designed for smartphones only and is optimised for iOS and Android devices. There is no Windows phone version.

iOS

Requires iPhone 5s or later running iOS 12+. Supports devices from iPhone 5s through to iPhone 15 Pro Max (A7 chip or later recommended).

Android

Requires Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or later. Devices must include an accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer for full functionality. Supports ARM 32-bit and 64-bit architectures.
