Licensing MVE Software



  • I opened a file that I created in 3DMove4.x in 3DMove5, why will it now not open in 3DMove4.x?

Once opened in 3DMove5, a file will take on the characteristics of version 5. To open it in a previous version you must export it from 3DMove5 as 4.x in the export options.


  • I can't see my models even though my license is installed, the software runs, the 3DMove window comes up, but the model is invisible. Why?

Is it a dual headed machine? If yes can you open it on the other window?
If you can only open on one window it is likely that the screen for the window it doesn't open on has a lower spec graphics card. This may also be true if you only have the one monitor.

3DMove5 is available for the following operating systems:

  • Linux

  • What are the Operating Systems requirements for running 3DMove5?

The Operating Systems requirements for 3DMove4.1 are as follows:

SGI - IRIX64 6.5.19+
Sun - Solaris7(2.7), Solaris8(2.8), Solaris2.9
Linux – We currently support: RedHat7.3, 8.0 and 9.0, SuSe8.0, 8.1 and 8.2. 3DMove5 may run on other distributions of Linux, however we have only tested it on RedHat and SuSe.

Note: At the time of writing this document, Redhat9.0 and SuSe8.2 are the latest versions of these operating systems, this may now not be the case, if you have are running a newer version, please mailto: to find out if the newer version is now supported.


  • What are the hardware requirements for running 3DMove5?

The hardware requirements for running 3DMove5 are as follows:

1. All CPUs should be x86 compatible, i.e. Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon

2. 3DMove does not mulithread, therefore the application will not actually make use of more than one processor in a machine, however having a dual processor configuration means 3DMove can run at maximum speed on one processor while leaving the operating system and any other applications to run on the other.

3. We would also recommend having swap space of at least twice the size of the memory you have in your system.

4. For optimal video performance with OpenGL when using an NVidia video card (TNT, GeForce2, GeForce3, GeForce4, Quadro), it is recommended that you use the accellerated drivers provided by NVIDIA on their website http://www.nvidia.com/drivers. These drivers deliver a performance increase of 5-10 times the default drivers that bundle with RedHat or SuSE linux. 3DMove on Linux is dual screen capable with a single desktop spanning two physical screens. This is recommended as it only additionally costs the price of a second monitor. You must purchase a Graphics Card that is advertised as dual display capable and has two CRT/DVI outputs eg GeForce4/Quadro4.

5. Laptops are designed for optimal display at the maximum resolution of the LCD screen. For example, a UXGA (1600 x 1200) LCD screen will not display images as clearly when set to SXGA (1400 x 1050) resolution.


  • What version of Solaris OpenGL should I be using and where can I get it?

Although 3DMove4.x will run under other versions of Open GL, 3DMove4.x is certified with Solaris Open GL 1.2.2. To list the OpenGL packages installed on you system use the pkginfo command:

Various versions of OpenGL can be downloaded from the Sun Microsystems Inc. website.

OpenGL 1.2.2 can be downloaded from the following location:

Version-specific recommended patches can also be downloaded from this location. It is very important to remove any previous versions of OpenGL before installing the new version. Installation instructions are given on the download web page.

It is necessary to log out and log back in before trying to run OpenGL applications, and after installing patches it is generally necessary to reboot the machine.


  • I have installed 3DMove5.0 and MVEflexlm on UNIX, saved my license to /usr/lib/mve_flex_licenses/, but when I try to run 3DMove I get an error message saying 'No such feature exists'. How can I get 3DMove to run?

3DMove can only run if it can locate the license across the network. To do this you will need to set the MVFD_LICENSE_FILE and MVE_FLEXHOST environment variables on the workstation to point to the license file.

Where port is the TCP/IP port number given in the {application}.lic file license file.

Licensing MVE Software

  • What type of license can I have?

A Node locked (local) license
A node locked license is suited to stand alone machines and single license agreements. The software can only run on the machine that the license has been installed on. A node locked license only needs the installation of a license file; no additional software is required. NOTE: Node Locked licenses are available on UNIX as evaluation licenses only; we cannot issue permanent Node Locked licenses on UNIX.

A Floating (network) license
A floating network license requires the installation of separate license manager software. The license manager may be installed on a different computer to that which you run the software on. It is also possible to install the license manager on a different platform i.e.:

  • The Solaris versions of 3DMove5 can be licensed from a Windows NT/2000 Server or a Solaris server.

  • What information do I need to send to obtain my license key?

To ensure that Midland Valley can provide you with your license key as quickly as possible, please request your license via e-mail and include the following details:

  • Name & e-mail address
  • Company Name and location.
  • Application license key required for i.e. 2DMove/3DMove
  • Type of license key required Node Locked / Floating Network
  • Operating System of system running application (potentially more than one).
  • Operating System of proposed license server, (Solaris, IRIX, Windows).
  • HostName and FLEXlm Host ID of machine hosting the license, this can be found by
  • Midland Valley sales contact if known

  • What information should I send if I have a problem with my license?

The most important piece of information, which you can send us, is the error message. Also let us know what version of the software you have and the platform you are trying to run it on.

If it is a problem with a network license also send us your log file. On windows this can be found at :

C:\Program Files\MVEflexlm8.4a\MveLM.log


  • Can I transfer my license?

Yes, you can transfer your license to another license server or to another site.

To do this contact with details of the transferral and you will be sent a license transferral form. When the license transferral form is returned we can issue you with your new license.
