Sequestration - CO2 and Rad-waste

The workflows and tools that we use to build and test geological models for the oil and gas and mining industries are directly applicable to carbon capture and storage projects and rad-waste storage. We are currently providing technical advice on best practice in structural geology workflows for CCS projects to several industry clients, universities and government organisations. Over the past year we have been working closely with Statoil and BP to help validate and test the structural model for the In Salah CCS project in North Africa, which is widely seen as a global test case for CCS technology.

The In Salah project has two distinct structural modelling phases. Phase 1 uses the kinematic modelling tools in Move to restore, test and validate the existing structural model in 3d, as well as considering alternative scenarios. Phase 2 will capture the strain attributes during the 3D restoration process. This information is then used to generate discrete fracture network (dfn) models based on our understanding of the structural evolution of the region. The fracture models are exported in a geocellular format ready for direct import into reservoir modelling packages for monitoring the long term integrity of the structure.
