Midland Valley's development team comprises engineers and management from a variety of relevant backgrounds, including computer science, mathematics, structural geology, physics and geo-computing. This diversity enables the team to deliver appropriate, timely technical software solutions for internal and external clients. Leading-edge software design and programming techniques are used to guarantee software quality and performance.
Colin Dunlop - Director
Colin originally joined Midland Valley in 1993 as a member of the 3DMove software development team. After a brief break working with Cambridge Animation as a Graphics Programmer Colin returned to Midland Valley in 1999 to be involved in a new development project concentrating on using software workflows to enhance and speed up complex geological tasks. Colin's broad experience and keen interest in 3D Graphics in general has enabled him to apply his knowledge to geological data in 3D visualisation for the oil and gas industry. He was key in the inception of the Midland Valley 4DMove project, as well as being part of the team coordinating and delivering our milestone Move product.
He is involved in software design, build and deployment management on a day to day basis, but his role also takes into account the broader perspective of emerging IT trends, toolsets and the industry to make sure that Midland Valley's Move Software is proactive and accommodates the needs of our clients, both today and tomorrow.
He enjoys spending time with his family, especially during weekends away in his ageing VW camper parked up on a remote white coral northern Scottish beach!

Luke Tutty, MSc - Software Developer (Intern)
Luke has joined Midland Valley on a one-year internship beginning in February 2010. Originally from south-east Ireland, he has a BSc in Computer Science and an MSc in Intelligent Systems from University College Cork. He will be working with the Software Development Engineers on the move to Move project.
Outside of work he likes to travel, kayak, play rugby and basket-ball, go cycling and hill-walking.

Mike Krus, PhD - Principal Development Engineer
Mike joined Midland Valley in 2005 as a Senior Software Engineer. Mike now manages all the Move related projects and is involved in application design and software development. His interests and expertise include software engineering project management and interactive 3D visualisation software design, which he developed previously at Trimble Inc. and during his PhD in France. |

Norman Armstrong - Principal Software Engineer
Norman is the lead engineer for 2DMove and 3DMove, and has been with Midland Valley for over 15 years.
An avid climber and all round adventurer, you are never quite sure where in the world Norman will pop up next!

Ryan Shackleton, PhD - Software Engineer/Structural Geologist
With a background in field geology, natural fractures, and geomechanics, Ryan joined the development team in 2006 to develop fully three-dimensional restoration tools in 4DMove module 4DRestore. Ryan obtained his PhD from the University of Massachusetts in 2009, where he studied fracturing and fold evolution of a thrust related anticline in the Spanish Pyrenees. Ryan used Midland Valley software to three-dimensionally reconstruct adjacent syn-tectonic strata, which constrains stepwise geomechanical restorations and the stress/strain history of the structure. Ryan also has an M.S. from the University of Alaska, where he studied fracturing in folded carbonate rocks in the Brooks Range.
In his spare time, Ryan enjoys whitewater kayaking, mountaineering, and cycling.
