Richard Walker
How does it feel to win? It’s hard to say - I’m still surprised that I won.
What did you find the most interesting/challenging part of your project?
I guess the fieldwork covers both parts. The Faroe Islands are a spectacular setting for structural studies, and despite the area being dominated by basalt lava flow units, I found the field aspect of the research to be quite multidisciplinary, requiring an understanding of structural, volcanological and sedimentological processes throughout the 6 months of my field work.
What /who inspired you to choose your subject/topic?
I’d been looking for projects that combined structural geology with volcanology to continue my masters research interests - I guess in that sense my time at the University of Leicester inspired me to apply to this project. Dave Ellis (Statoil), Bob Holdsworth and Jonny Imber (both University of Durham) made a very good impression on me at the PhD interview, and that’s what really inspired me to take the position though.
What do you hope to do next in your career?
I’ve just started a PDRA position at the University of Durham, working with Bob Holdsworth, Nic De Paola and Nigel Woodcock (University of Cambridge) continuing on some of the themes of my PhD. I’m aiming to stay in academia for the time-being.
What do you love most about structural geology?
The diversity of the subject, and the common need for a multidisciplinary approach.
