Our Academic Software Initiative (the ASI) provides academic institutes with unlimited access to free licences of MoveTM for teaching and non-commercial research purposes.
Becoming a member of the ASI
Contact us indicating that you would like to become a member. Please note that we cannot license the software to students so please have a member of staff (course supervisor/lecturer/professor) place the request.
Our Standard Academic Package comes with 20 licenses to sit on a computer network however there is no limit as to how many licenses a university can have.
As well as loading the Move suite onto the University computer network, additional licences of FieldMove can be provided for tablet PC's being taken into the field.
Already a member?
As part of the ASI, member institutes will provide, where possible, a summary of usage, example datasets and workflows which will feed into our future Move software development plans and tutorial material as well as forming the basis of their case-study page on our website. Where the software is acknowledged on a poster or in a paper please refer to these guidelines.
Details
- Licenses are issued on an annual basis and ASI members are requested to provide a usage report upon renewal.
- Annual usage reports feed into our ASI Members case-study area which we hope will facilitate the sharing of ideas and resources to maximize the benefits of being an ASI Member.
- The software cannot be used for any commercial purpose including commercial funded projects the results of which are not in the public domain.
- The agreement must be signed by a legal representative of the University and cannot be signed by a student.
- Help-desk assistance is not included however an Academic Support Package is available for USD$2,000 per annum.
Background
The ASI was introduced at the end of 2008 to celebrate our 25th birthday to help address the global skills shortage in specialist structural geologists and general earth science graduates. Since its launch we have provided annual licences globally mounting to a monetary investment of over UK£125m to over 200 geoscience departments.
At the time of the launch our Founding Director Alan Gibbs said "with growth in the world’s economies in China and Asia, demand for energy and strategic minerals is running ahead of our ability to provide these at reasonable cost. The Industry is being forced to explore for new reserves in technically and logistically more complex areas and then to produce them with maximum recovery and the lowest possible environmental footprint. The same geological technologies are also needed for best sequestration and disposal strategies of the by-products of both the energy and minerals industry. Geologists will have an increasing social and economic role to play, and as students, they need access to best tools and workflows that are used in industry".
